Abstract

Have you ever had disengaged students in class? Have you ever wondered why some students cannot sit still throughout the lesson? Have you ever questioned if students with learning difficulties can focus and learn while you are teaching?

Every student is unique and different. As teachers, it is important that lessons are designed to cater for learners’ diversities and needs. While we embrace the divergence in our class, with tight schedules, it can be difficult for teachers to look after each student individually. Therefore, a lesson which accommodates various learning styles and empowers students to own their learning could be a solution.

The multi-sensory approach has long been proven to be an effective way to engage students of different learning styles and needs. Research has shown that the multi-sensory approach is beneficial to the learning of students with special educational needs. But how to put this approach into practice in a Hong Kong classroom is a question that many may ask.

Based on her teaching experience in a local secondary school, the speaker will share her experience in adopting the multi-sensory approach in an ordinary classroom. She will also talk about how she designs her lessons to take care of the diverse needs of her students. There will be some practices and activities that the audience can take away from the seminar.
